Dr Adri Oosthuizen is a highly experienced general practitioner with over 40 years of
service in South African healthcare. A graduate of the University of the Free State, she
earned both her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 1982 and Master of
Medicine in Family Medicine (MMed-Fam Med) in 1986, establishing a career marked by
compassion, innovation, and dedication to patient-centred care. Dr Oosthuizen began
her journey as the first female doctor in the South African Defence Force to obtain an
aviation medicine qualification, serving at Air Force Base Langebaan. She later
specialised in women’s reproductive health at III Military Hospital and spent more than
a decade at the University of the Free State’s Infertility Clinic, contributing significantly
to advances in fertility care. Her interest in oncology and palliative care evolved through
her later work at ABJ Oncology, where she practiced until her retirement in 2025. Deeply
passionate about women’s health, infertility, oncology, and end-of-life care, Dr
Oosthuizen continues to engage in these fields post-retirement. Her holistic approach
to medicine reflects a lifelong commitment to supporting patients through all stages
of life—from conception to dignified end-of-life care. She has also contributed to
academic literature, including a publication on infertility and tuberculosis in the South
African Medical Journal.
