Dr Fusi Madela is a surgical gastroenterologist and hepatopancreaticbiliary (HPB) surgeon with a
strong track record in advanced clinical care, surgical leadership, and academic excellence. He has
played a key role in developing specialist surgical services, including leading the commissioning of
surgical services at Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital and heading the department of
specialised surgery at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. As a lecturer at the University of
KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Madela has trained medical students, surgical registrars, and HPB subspecialty
fellows, while also supervising postgraduate research. He completed his medical degree at the
University of Cape Town, qualified as a Fellow of the College of Surgeons (FCS) in 2012, and
obtained his subspecialist certification in HPB Surgery at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2020.
Dr Madela’s doctoral research explored the relationship between pancreatitis and pancreatic
cancer in an HIV-endemic region, with his findings published in peer-reviewed local and
international journals. His research contributions were further recognised through the prestigious
Discovery Foundation research grant. He brings to private practice a combination of specialist
expertise, academic insight, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred
surgical care.
