Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital celebrates grand opening of new Emergency Department and ICU, and unveils tribute wall
December 2023 – On Tuesday, 5 December 2023, Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada Private celebrated a momentous occasion as it proudly opened the new emergency department, the new Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and a refurbished reception area. The grand event also featured the unveiling of a tribute wall dedicated to South African anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada, who the hospital is named after and whose legacy the facility proudly carries.
The extensive renovations and enhancements – which commenced in January this year – underscore the hospital’s commitment to elevate the provision of quality healthcare services to people from the communities of Lenasia, Soweto, Eldorado Park and the south of Johannesburg. The upgraded ICU and emergency department are equipped with cutting-edge technology and designed to meet the highest standards of patient care. The emergency department, which has been expanded to cater to more patients seeking care, features 2 additional resus bays, and 8 more cubicles, more than doubling the consulting space. The new sophisticated High Care and ICU unit will add 20 more beds to care for our patients needing specialised care.
The reception and waiting areas have been redesigned to ensure a welcoming and efficient environment for patients, their families, and healthcare professionals.
Hospital CEO, Sagran Sukhessan expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort that made these renovations possible.

In a heartfelt speech, Lenmed Group CEO, Amil Devchand reflected on the journey that has led to the recent milestone, where he shared;

The ceremony also included the unveiling of a tribute wall dedicated to Ahmed Kathrada, whom the hospital was named after in its 30th year of serving the people. Devchand shared how “Ahmed Kathrada’s story reminds us, that despite the challenges and perhaps sometimes insurmountable odds we may face, anything is possible.”
The event was attended by community leaders, healthcare professionals, and members of the public who joined in celebrating this significant milestone for Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital.
