Lenmed Wilmed Park Hospital and Heart Centre Strengthens Its Position as a Cardiac Centre of Excellence
Lenmed Wilmed Park Hospital and Heart Centre has taken another significant step in advancing its reputation as a leading cardiac facility in the North West province, following the successful
completion of complex Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) procedures. This intervention, traditionally performed through open-heart surgery, were completed percutaneously by the hospital’s resident interventional cardiologist, Dr Don Zachariah, marking a milestone for cardiac services in Klerksdorp and the broader region.
CTO interventions are widely recognised as among the most technically demanding procedures in interventional cardiology. Treating long-standing coronary blockages without the need for bypass surgery requires exceptional skill, precise execution, and the application of the latest global techniques in a safe and controlled environment.
Supporting the hospital’s efforts was visiting UK cardiologist Dr Abdul Mozid, in partnership with SA Medical, who collaborated in a supportive capacity for the recent procedures. His involvement reflects Lenmed’s commitment to strengthening international clinical partnerships while highlighting the depth of expertise and leadership already present within the Lenmed Wilmed Park Hospital and Heart Centre.
“We are proud to offer procedures in Klerksdorp that were previously limited, now supported by the state-of-the-art equipment and technology available at Lenmed Wilmed Park Hospital and Heart Centre,” said Dr Don Zachariah. “Our focus is to stay current, adopt global best practice, and ensure that every patient – whether local or from neighbouring provinces – has access to world-class cardiac care. The success of these complex cases is a testament to collaboration and our shared commitment to improving cardiac outcomes for our community.”
Dr Mozid commended the hospital’s progress and emphasised the high standards already established within the unit. “What stands out at the hospital is the dedication to innovation and evidence based cardiology,” he said. “It has been a privilege to collaborate with Dr Zachariah. His skill, leadership, and technical mastery of complex coronary work are elevating cardiac care in this part of South Africa.”
Alex Daneel, Hospital CEO, noted the growing demand for advanced cardiology services. “The footprint of Lenmed’s cardiac programme continues to expand, with patients on the day of the procedures travelling from as far as the Northern Cape and Mafikeng. This reinforces the hospital’s position as an emerging destination for advanced medical services. As demand grows, our vision of establishing Lenmed Wilmed Park Hospital and Heart Centre as a regional hub for interventional cardiology is steadily becoming a reality. A big thank you to SA Medical for helping making this possible.”
Lenmed Wilmed Park Hospital and Heart Centre remains committed to clinical excellence, ongoing innovation, and strengthening collaborative partnerships that enhance access to leading cardiac treatment for all patients.
