Miracle Story of Baby Sinethemba Zanokuhle Hlengwa
On Thursday, 2 March 2023, Baby Hlengwa was born prematurely and underweight at 590g at a hospital in Newcastle. Noting some of the child’s needs post-birth, her aunt (my sister) found out and reached out to Doctor Vawda, a well-known paediatrician in Ladysmith, who agreed to take the child and give her a chance at life.
My baby was transferred to Lenmed La Verna Private Hospital on 3 March 2023 where she was treated under the supervision of Dr Vawda. She was transferred with no oxygen, no food, and no drip for more than 24 hours after being delivered. We had little hope that she was going to survive after being told that she would only live a few hours. The nurses who were on duty that night prepared all the equipment and were ready for my baby to arrive with her aunt while I was still in high care. They were welcomed with warm hands by Sister Thandeka Dlamini and EN Thandazile Shabangu.
We were given hope that the baby will survive, and they promised to do all that they could to ensure that my baby lives. My baby stayed for 96 days in the NICU, while being given proper care. There were no complications with her in this journey because the NICU staff and doctor did all that they could to ensure she survives each day. The NICU staff were so amazing and gave me positive hope that my baby will survive. They convinced me every day that baby is strong, and that she will conquer all the obstacles she faced. The staff was able to make me forget all my troubles and helped me to be calm and positive.
I am so grateful to both the staff of Lenmed La Verna Private Hospital and Dr Vawda for giving me a chance to be a mother. I will never forget the amazing service we received with the staff making the entire journey much easier. I will be forever grateful to all the nurses who were on duty taking care of my precious daughter. Dr Vawda and the NICU nurses did wonders using the resources available to them to ensure my baby is well taken care of. Thank you to Lenmed La Verna Private Hospital! The Hlengwa family will always be grateful for what you did by living the Lenmed values and going above and beyond to save a life.
