Lenmed Launches Acute Rehabilitation at Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre
November 2024 – We are proud to announce the opening of Lenmed’s first Acute Rehabilitation at Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre. This exciting addition to our comprehensive patient offering will extend our capabilities to support patients during their recovery process.
Acute Rehabilitation is designed to provide intensive, interdisciplinary rehabilitation and medical management to patients who have reduced abilities and level of independence in daily activities following conditions such as stroke, severe illnesses, traumatic injuries, including spinal and brain injuries, or major surgeries. Our specialized inpatient facility focuses on helping patients regain functional independence and return to their daily activities with minimal assistance.
Dr Nilesh Patel, Group Chief Medical Officer felt that ‘It is a privilege to offer this life-changing service to our patients, empowering them to overcome and adapt to the trauma of disabling events. Improving their ability to manage daily activities that most take for granted, enabling them to reach the highest possible level of independence in daily living.
The Lenmed Acute Rehabilitation unit will offer:
- Treatment from an interdisciplinary team, including a rehabilitation physician, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, social workers, and administrative assistance from case managers.
- A detailed admission assessment, individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s capabilities and condition and early discharge planning
- Intensive rehabilitation where each patient will receive multidisciplinary therapy.
- Medical management and supervision of underlying health conditions, medications, including prevention of and early identification of potential complications.
- Family involvement throughout the rehabilitation process, including education and carer training on how to best support their loved ones during and after the rehabilitation stay.
The Lenmed Acute Rehabilitation Unit aims to maximize functional independence, restore quality of life, and facilitate a safe and timely discharge to a home or community setting. Additionally, the unit seeks to enable faster recovery and return to normal activities where possible, improve physical and cognitive function, better manage pain and other symptoms, enhance emotional and psychological well-being, and reduce the risk of complications and hospital readmissions.
Conditions treated at the Acute Rehabilitation Unit include debility following major medical illnesses, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopaedic injuries, neurological injuries, cardiac conditions, burns, and amputations.
