Lenmed’s Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre celebrate its 100th MAKO SmartRobotics™ knee and hip replacement
November 2022 – A year after being the first hospital in Durban to offer MAKO SmartRobotics™ knee and hip replacements, Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre performs its 100th procedure.
Since inception of the orthopaedic robotic service, patients have enjoyed a quicker recovery time, experienced less pain and are able to go home quicker post-surgery. “This has meant huge benefits for our communities, resulting in a faster return-to-work time, and essentially assisting in our communities getting back to their busy lives quicker”, said hospital CEO Niresh Bechan.
The MAKO SmartRoboticsTM robot is unique in that it creates a 3D scan which is specific to the patient’s structure, meaning unique and accurate planning prior to the procedure, which because of the accurate and specific programming to the patient, precise and safer surgery takes place under the guidance of the robot. Throughout the procedure consistent data analytics provide the surgeon with information regarding movement and ligament tension.
Lenmed CEO, Amil Devchand added, “It is through work like this, leveraging off the best and most innovative the industry has to offer that we fulfil our purpose of building healthier and prosperous communities and ensure we make a positive difference to the lives of those within our care, as well as their families. We are incredibly proud of reaching the 100th procedure milestone and look forward to many more successful surgeries to come”.
