Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital emergency department undergoing transformation
October 2023 – Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital has been carrying out a project to expand and refurbish its emergency department since January this year.
The emergency department refurbishment represents a significant investment in the hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services to the community of Lenasia, Soweto, Eldorado Park and the south of Johannesburg. As a flagship hospital of the Lenmed group and has been in existence since the early 1980s, Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital and the Lenmed team recognised the importance of enhancing and expanding its facilities to capacitate the requirements of its specialized trauma offering to the community it serves. The department serves over 1 500 patients per month, and following the expansion, it will have the capacity to provide an even better patient experience to at least 2 500 patients per month.
The emergency department’s expansion is being done to ensure that the higher patient capacity and acuity are supported. Through the renovations, the hospital intends to create a more efficient and comfortable environment for both patients and the hospital’s staff. The add-ons include the increase of consulting cubicles, waiting areas, examination rooms, triage areas, and treatment and resuscitation zones.
Shedding light on the purpose of the enhancements, Hospital CEO, Sagran Sukhessan said; “We understand the importance of minimising wait times and ensuring patient privacy. The project focuses on optimising patient flow within the unit, implementing innovative triage systems, and enhancing private consultation areas to improve how people experience our hospital. In addition, the hospital treats many specialized and serious trauma cases and we are enhancing our systems and facility to better cater for this.”
Additionally, new medical technology and equipment will be included as part of the renovations to improve the initial evaluation of patients and help identify how quickly they need to be treated and what kind of care they need.
Through thoughtful aesthetics and a patient-centred approach, the hospital aims to create a healing environment that promotes wellness and facilitates the delivery of exceptional care.
The refurbishment project has been carried out in three phases, with the first and second phases having commenced in January and May, respectively and phase three in August. The refurbishment project will play a vital role in elevating the standard of emergency medical care and the completion and opening of the modified areas is anticipated for November 2023.
