Lenmed Parkmed Neuro Clinic championing mental health as a universal human right
October 2023 – As South Africa observes Mental Health Awareness Month in October, Lenmed’s Parkmed Neuro Clinic is on a mission to consistently deliver care to patients. With this year’s World Mental Health Day theme being “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right”, the facility’s commitment extends beyond just observing a single day.
In a world where the stigma surrounding mental health issues still persists and statistics shared by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) that 1 in 3 South Africans will or do have a mental illness at some point in their lifetime, Lenmed Parkmed Neuro Clinic has pledged to showcase how healthcare providers can play a pivotal role in promoting mental health awareness and ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need.
Deputy Nursing Manager, Iona Kock shared that; “hospitals play a crucial role in promoting mental health as a universal human right and this can be done through raising awareness, promoting access to care and driving advocacy efforts to promote mental health policies and legislation that protect the rights of individuals with mental health conditions.”
Specialising in the treatment, care and rehabilitation of various psychiatric conditions, the facility is also committed to educating the community to help reduce stigma and encourage individuals to seek help when needed, as well as ensuring that the hospital’s services, support and reliable information and are readily available to patients.
To achieve what they have set out to do, Lenmed Parkmed Neuro Clinic also ensures that their healthcare professionals and support staff receive training in mental health awareness and care, enabling them to provide empathetic and effective care to individuals struggling with mental health issues.
Seeking to be a shining example of a healthcare institution that understands that mental health is a year-round commitment. Their dedication to the theme, “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,” serves as a beacon of hope and support for their community. By providing continuous education, outreach, and resources, they demonstrate that mental well-being is not just a once-a- year concern but an essential aspect of healthcare that should be promoted and celebrated every day.
